As the guys are trying hard to get the library organized. Grandpappy Spears joins Abner for a game of checkers that breaks down in an arguement over cheating. Lum enters to tell how much support Miss Fredericks will be to the logistics of the library, and thinks the pictures of the big city libraries will be a help.
Lum’s idea for lions are misunderstood by Abner. The confusion ends with Lum storming out, but when Squire enters, Abner asks the rival to help get some real lions for Lum, instead of the statues that were intended.
