Connie looks forward to returning to school, and seeing Mr Boynton again. Word on the street has it that there may be changes to the faculty this year. When Walter picks up Connie, they go to get Harriot and we learn that Mr Conklin is in a particularly bad mood. What’s he worried about? With all the gang at school to do their various cleaning chores, Mr Conklin is told that he needs to bring home some laundry for his wife to wash for the Snodgrass family.

Word persists at school about a change to the faculty lineup. When Connie and Mr Boynton see the shabby clothes that Mr Conklin is wearing, and the bundle of laundry he is taking home, they think he is down and out, and think his job is on the chopping block.

Knowing the pride that Mr Conklin has, the cast won’t approach him directly, but his behavior is mistaken for someone who is short on cash, and trying to conserve his resources. With all the worrying going on, the ground is set for mix ups to explode.

Connie, and the cast have a surprise that they think will help the down and out Conklin, but when Mr Stone visits, it just might mean the end of his chances for that promotion.
