Phil and Alice try to decide where to take their Summer vacation. Alice leaves the decision up to the girls, but it looks like Phil has been coaching them. Alice still isn’t convinced, so she asks Willie for his input. Willie plans on roughing it out in the wild country, which amuses Phil.
Remley pops in, and he has an idea that may save money and convince Alice that the trip to Hawaii can be done economically. He knows a guy who wants to sell a yacht. Not trusting Frankie’s friend, Phil goes to see his own friend about a boat. Somehow, he ends up buying the boat Frankie had in mind. Sight unseen, and based only on a picture. Frankie and Phil dream about sailing around the world, but it leads to Phil singing, Minnie the Mermaid.
Julius has snuck in to tease Phil about his singing, and about the boat that was just bought. The gang all go to the dock to get their first look at the boat. Hey, just because it’s underwater doesn’t mean it’s not a good boat, says Remley.
While the salvage crew raises the boat, Alice sings, Johnnie Get Your Girl.
Conveniently, the boat is up, and a trial run is in order. Being a veteran of the Coast Guard during the war, Phil shows off his nautical ability. With an engine that purs in such a way that makes Jack Benny’s Maxwell sound like a race car, they pull away from the dock, but fortunately, only for comic affect before they pull back in.
Note: I could be mistaken, but i was pretty sure that Phil joined the Merchant Marine, and served in a reserve, or part time statusduring the war. His whole band had joined up, and though Dennis Day did leave the Jack Benny show for his active service in the Navy, Phil was only gone for a few weeks. Just about the time it would take for basic training.
PS: You’d think that Remley, also known as Elliot Lewis, also known as Philip Carney, would know more about yachts. Maybe after his stint with the Scarlet Queen he had a major memory dump, and forgot all those sailing adventures or something.
