Burns and Allen – Returning To America (Edited) 340926. With shortened opening and closing credits, and commercials that have been nicely tailored out, here’s a rare early classic from George and Gracie.
In a hotel lobby, the staff are eager when they learn that Gracie is leaving to return to America. Naturally, any setting that Gracie is in is an excuse for jokes, and insightful observances about that setting. With the hotel and travelling jokes done, the scene changes.
As a result of the travelling the couple have just done, George has changed his mind, He no longer thinks that Gracie is the silliest girl in America. He’s certain that she’s the silliest girl in the world. On their way out, and following the porter, Gracie gets confused over Brittish sports, namely chricket. Amid the joking around on the way to the dock, George mentions Gracie’s pet dog named Herman. In later seasons, she would have a duck named Herman.
George and Gracie manages to get onboard the ship and walk the decks. Gracie mistakes a sailor who is swabbing the deck, as walking his poodle. The captain meets them and walks with them. They enter a room where guests are having a party, and ask George and Gracie to sing. Wow, they ask George to sing? I suppose his reputation hadn’t preceded him yet. George sings, and is joined by Gracie to cut loose with a medley.
A mid show commercial seems to be edited out, and the ship arrives in America. As they go through customs, Gracie gets confused over the process. Will George and Gracie ever make it through customs? Her comments are enough to frustrate the agent, but the show runs short and the closing commercial puts an end to it.
