Amos and Andy – Bookends And Babies With a Retro Plus from 1929. First Show: 07-05-1929 The Real Criminals Talk About Amos. Opens with the two crooks argueing. They talk about their past crimes as they grow anxious to leave town. They’re laying low until Amos gets sent to the pen so they can go on other crime sprees.
Meanwhile, Amos is still worried despite Andy trying to comfort him.
Second Show: 12-10-1943 Babies and Bookends, with Ginger Rogers. Features Ginger Rogers. In a downtown department store, Mrs VanPorter buys a set of bookends for Andy, from salesgirl, Ginger Rogers. Andy let’s Kingfish know about his job he starts, and despite Kingfish’s deepest sympathy, Andy still plans to start on New Years Day. Soon we find Andy in the department store, but he’s caught red handed by Mrs VanPorter trying to return the gifts.
Doing some wheeling and dealing down at the pawn shop, Andy unloads the bookends and ends up with a baby carriage. Ready? Here come the mix ups. Rumors fly, and when they return to Andy the word has changed to become that the Rev Crawford’s wife is having a baby on New Years Day, at the same hospital where Andy is to start his new job. Imagine that!
At least it’s an excuse to head bacvk to the department store, where Ginger has just been transfered to the baby department. Ginger Rogers shines as she dishes the comedy back at Andy and Kingfish. When all the friends in the neighborhood trhow a surprise shower for the Crawford’s baby,the bubble is burst. With the embarrassment over it all, will Andy still have his job?
